Damping device for a vibration damper as part of a vehicle suspension system

A damping device for a vibration damper forming part of a vehicle suspension system is described, to the working piston of which a damping valve for each direction of movement (compression and tension phase) is assigned. For adjustment of the damping force of at least one of the damping valves a backing element is assigned to its valve closing element, which backing element can be pressed with adjustable force onto the valve closing element by means of a hydraulic fluid fed from outside by a pressure source. The damping device comprises at least one cylinder assembly equipped with a stepped piston, the one cylinder chamber of which assembly can be connected to the pressure source and to the other cylinder chamber of which the hydraulic fluid is applied. The cylinder assembly may form a pressure booster or a pressure reducer and enables the contact pressure acting on the backing element to be increased or reduced in stages starting from a basic setting of the damping.
