PURPOSE:To obtain optically active 3-(1-hydroxyetyl)-2-azetidinone, in high efficiency, by hydrolyzing dl-3-(1-acyloxyethyl)-2-azetidinone with a microorganism or an enzyme. CONSTITUTION:An optically inactive azetidinone derivative (dl-isomer) of formula I [R<1> is acyl; R<2> is alkyl, alkenyl, etc.; R<3> is H or N-protecting group (silyl, etc.)] is selectively hydrolyzed with a microorganism (e.g. Arthrobacter simplex SANK 73560 (IAM 1660)] or an enzyme (e.g. lipase, esterase, aminoacylase, etc.) to obtain the optically active beta-lactam compound of formula II. |
