PURPOSE:To decrease the time required for transmission by storing picture information with the coding system set when the setting a transmission function is finished in the transmission pre-procedure and executing in parallel the transmission processing of picture information and the storage processing. CONSTITUTION:A transmission terminal discriminates a function used in common by the own terminal from transmission functions represented by an identification signal PS 1 of a reception terminal and sends a transmission function set signal PS 2 to the reception terminal. A picture signal outputted from a picture read section 3 is given to a data compression section 4, where the signal is code- compressed by the set coding system and the resulting transmission picture information is stored sequentially in the picture memory 2. On the other hand, the transmission control procedure by a communication control section 7 is executed consecutively during that time and when a receivable signal PS 4 responds by the reception terminal, the transmission processing of transmission picture information PIX is executed. Thus, the storage of the transmission picture information is started just after the transmission function is set and the storage and transmission of the picture information are executed in parallel, then the time required for facsimile transmission is reduced.
