PURPOSE:To perform an optimum picture processing even for an original having a part painted all over in white or black by detecting a maximum value and a minimum value of picture density levels of the original picture and invalidating the maximum value and the minimum value if the difference between them is not within a prescribed range. CONSTITUTION:When receiving comparison outputs from AND gates 206 and 209, latches 205 and 208 latch a 6-bit picture signal sent from a latch 202 and send it to a CPU 211. Thus, the minimum value and the maximum value of the picture signal inputted till then are latched in latches 205 and 208. By this constitution, the maximum value and the minimum value of picture density levels of the original are detected in every line, and the picture signal obtained by reading the original is processed on a basis of detected maximum and minimum values, and the maximum value and the minimum value of the line are invalidated if the difference between them is not a prescribed value, and an optimum picture processing is performed even for the original having a part painted all over in white or black or a half tone.
