PURPOSE:To hold the nearly specified hydrogen overvoltage in the range of the electrolytic operation for a long period by coating a surface of a cathodic base material as a cathode which is used in the electrolysis of an aq. alkali chloride soln. with an activated substance consisting of Ni and Ti of the specified ratio. CONSTITUTION:As a cathode used in the electrolysis of an aq. alkali chloride soln. such as NaCl, the following electrode is used wherein an activated substance consisting of Ni and Ti contg. <=15wt% Ti is coated on a surface of a base material by means of a thermal spraying method such as the plasma spraying and the flame spraying and a plating method, etc. The electrolysis of the aq. NaCl soln. can be performed in a state wherein the hydrogen overvoltage is nearly specified for a long period.
