The invention relates to a dyeing composition for keratinous fibres containing at least one 4-bis( beta -hydroxyethyl)amino-2-nitro-1-(N-substituted amino)benzene compound in which the substitution is C1-C3 alkyl or beta -hydroxyethyl; this composition contains as co-solubilization agent at least one dye of formula (II) in which formula: R2 denotes a C2-C3 hydroxyalkyl group; R3 denotes a C2-C3 hydroxyalkyl group; with the proviso that, if R3=CH2CH2OH, R2 is necessarily an alpha -hydroxyethyl or hydroxypropyl radical.
