New process for the preparation of p-tert.butyl-benzene derivatives wherein p-tert.butyl-benzyl chloride with a 2-formylpropionate having the formula (II) wherein R is lower alkyl, for example C1-6 alkyl and particularly methyl or ethyl and, optionally, the resulting compound having the formula (I), wherein R has the meaning given above, is transformed optionally after purification, by decarbalkoxylation into p-tert.butyl- alpha -methyl-hydrocinnamic aldehyde.
