A benzothiazepin deriv. of the formula (I) is prepd. by reacting a corresponding cpd. of the formula (II) with 2-dimethylaminoethyl chloride in a biphasic system of water and a non-combustible aliphatic polychlorinated hydrocarbon solvent in the presence of calcium hydroxide or barium hydroxide. (R = H or acetyl). The product may subsequently be converted into a salt by reaction with an inorganic or organic acid.
