The method comprises mounting the levers (2,3) on a support frame (4) to form a sub-assembly which is fastened to the body (1) of a motor vehicle. When the support frame is brought towards the body, the levers pass through apertures (7,8) in the body. - The support frame and sub-assembly are fastened beneath the vehicle body. The support frame is formed by a stamped sheet metal element and has supports (24) for resilient suspension of the vehicle exhaust tubing.
