In the field of composite materials and in particular for wire-shaped or rod-shaped composite bodies having a multiplicity of filaments arranged in the composite body, the object exists of introducing as many filaments as possible into a billet, which is then formed by pressing or drawing to form a rod or wire. According to the invention, a mat (4) having longitudinal wires (A, B) which lie closely adjacent to one another and have a circular cross-section is woven and said mat is rolled up, if appropriate, together with a film (5, 6, 7). The rolled-up mat, if appropriate together with a tubular sleeve and a core of the rest of the material of the composite body, is then subjected to a cross-section-reducing deformation. The composite body thus formed can be used for example as an electrical conductor (superconductor), light guide (glass fibre cable) or as fibre composite material having high tensile strength. <IMAGE>
