The coating edge limiter for an application means for the coating of continuous webs of material, especially paper, seals, laterally at both ends of a mating roll guiding the length of paper, an application zone formed between the application opening of a chamber for the coating mass, a doctor element, and a throttle plate situated on the leading side of the chamber. The coating edge limiter has channels which open laterally outwards near the application zone in the direction towards the length of goods or the mating roll, and serve to conduct a cleaning liquid into the region of the coating edge limiter. Lumps of the coating compound are thereby prevented from forming and becoming attached to the parts of the coating device or the mating roll, or even to the length of paper.
