In an incremental position measuring device for a measurement path which can be split into path sections, sensors (G1, G2) are provided for equidistant path marks (W11 to W1n and W21 to W2n, respectively) and reference marks (R1, R2). The position of each path section inside the measurement path can be detected by a phase shift of the reference marks (R1, R2) relative to one another that is specific to the path section. The fine location inside the particular measurement section is determined from the path marks. <IMAGE>
