The web of thin sheet wound into rolls of relatively large dimensions is provided for storage and transportation directly with a covering of impermeable paper and then with a further covering of sheet metal as a protective packaging. In this case, the sheet metal covering consists of steel sheet sections which are profiled in a semi-shell shape, are placed against one another along the circumference and attached to one another. This is done by an automatically operating device which comprises, inter alia, a ram of special construction and a tubular connector.
