Coke oven door - sealed by separate sealing plate separated by spacers from door and with spring-loaded knife edges

The door for the end of a coke oven has on the side facing the oven chamber a sealing plate with a knife edge on the periphery, turned towards the oven. Spacers retain a distance between this plate and the inner door face. A number of helical springs can be used to press the flexible plate periphery with the knife edge against the door frame. This prevents thermal distortion of the door and produces a tight seal of the oven. The design is simple and robust, the sealing plate can be easily kept clean of tar and pitch.
