PURPOSE:To produce a polymer containing ether linkages in the main chain excellent in heat resistance and solvent resistance, by reacting an aromatic dihydric phenol with a xylylene dihalide in the presence of a solvent and an alkali. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic dihydric phenol of formula I (wherein Z is a group of one of formulas II-IV) is reacted with a xylylene dihalide of formula V (wherein X is a halogen) in a molar ratio of 0.95-1.05 in a solvent (e.g., N- methylpyrrolidone) in the presence of 2.0-4.0 equivalents per equivalent of the phenol, of an alkali (e.g., NaOH) at 20-200 deg.C for at least 30min to obtain a polymer having a recurring unit consisting of a plurality of connected groups of formula VI, having H's or X's (wherein X is a halogen) as terminals, and having a reduced viscosity at 60 deg.C>=0.05, a m.p. >=240 deg.C, and a heat decomposition initiation temperature >=360 deg.C.
