A process for preparing polyketone is provided to obtain polyketone having a high catalytic activity and a high intrinsic viscosity while maintaining excellent physical properties. The process for preparing polyketone comprises a step of copolymerizing ethylenically unsaturated compounds with carbon monooxide in a liquid medium in the presence of a catalyst. In the process, the catalyst is an organometal complex comprising (a) a Group 9, 10 or 11 transition metal compound and (b) a ligand containing a Group 15 element. The liquid medium is a mixed solvent containing 30-60 vol% of acetic acid and 40-70 vol% of water. Additionally, the organometal complex catalyst is a synthetic palladium chloride-[1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane]- paratoluenesulfonic acid precursor.
