In the method according to the invention, the time duration of a signal to be transmitted or received on a connection line is defined with the aid of a timer whose expiry period is defined by time information entered in a memory assigned to the connection line concerned. When a signal is transmitted, the time information entered in the memory directly identifies the expiry period of the timer and thus the time duration of the signal to be transmitted. When a signal is received, the timer is initially set to the shortest possible duration of this signal. It is then established whether the signal was already ended or not when the timer expired. If the signal continues, new time information is entered in the memory and the timer is restarted. The time information present in the memory at the end of a signal indicates the category to which the signal belongs.
