PURPOSE:To stabilize operation and to improve the quality of a steel strip by scanning the surfaces of the strip after descaling in the lateral direction and by integrating each of the resulting image signals to obtain an index showing the average state of residual scale. CONSTITUTION:The surfaces of a steel strip after descaling are scanned in the lateral direction with an electron scanning type photoelectric converter to obtain image signals. Each of the signals is integrated to obtain an index showing the average state of residual scale in the lateral direction. A signal obtd. by differentiating each of the image signals is also integrated, and the peak value is detected to obtain an index showing the state of residual scale distributed locally in the lateral direction. Thus, the descaled state before cold rolling can be detected and quantified, operation is stabilized, and the quality of the strip is improved.
