The heating device has a holder for the object or material being heated and an electrical heating element connected to the holder. The heating element is realised as a thick-film resistance layer on a support. The resistance layer has the characteristics of a thermistor. The support includes one wall of the holder. The resistance layer extends over a considerable part of the wall. The heating device may be a cooking hob and the holder may be a plate supporting cooking utensils and made of a material of low thermal conductivity (e.g. stainless steel or glass ceramic). The support plate may be enamelled. Alternatively, the device may be an oven and the holder may be the oven chamber with the resistance layer extending over at least one of its walls. The resistance layer is external. The device may also be used to heat liquids.
