<p>In a method and apparatus for processing documents (28) such as checks, a document reader such as a MICR reader (32) for example, and an imaging apparatus (73) are included along the document feed path (14) to generate MICR data and digitized image data for each document (28) passing thereby. A document (28) whose MICR data is read correctly is routinely sorted while a document (28) whoseMICR data for a field is missing, is directed to a reject pocket (23) having an encoder (13) associated therewith. The data needed to complete the missing field is obtained by an operator viewing an image of the document on a data entry terminal (128) while the associated document (28) is stored at the encoder (13). The data provided by the operator is printed by the encoder (13) on the associated document (28), thereby completing the missing field. </p> |
