A power supply device, which is used, for example, in a motor vehicle, contains a generator (1), an accumulator (2) and a voltage regulator (3) for regulating the voltage at which the accumulator is charged. The voltage regulator is composed of an electrical measurement unit (31) which measures the amount of current inserted into the accumulator (2) and taken from the accumulator (2), an arithmetic unit (32) which calculates a ratio between the amounts of current inserted and taken and compares the calculated ratio with a specified value, and a regulator (33) which regulates the voltage produced by the generator in accordance with a signal which comes from the arithmetic unit (32). <IMAGE>
