Auxiliary instrument for the introduction of tracheal tubes

The risks associated with the nasal introduction of tracheal tubes can be reduced by use of an auxiliary instrument which comprises a traction member (1) and a tubular sheath (2) which is closed on one side, is fastened on the end of the member and consists of a thin-walled, flexible material, especially a rubber or plastic balloon open on one side, which sheath is longer than the tracheal tube section extending from the introduction end beyond the fixing balloon and the diameter of which is larger than the diameter of this section including the uninflated fixing balloon. The auxiliary instrument is joined to the tracheal tube, before introduction of the latter, by pushing the sheath over the introduction end of the tracheal tube and pushing the traction member through the tracheal tube. During insertion of the tracheal tube through the nasal space, both the balloon of the tracheal tube and the patient are protected by the sheath. The auxiliary instrument can be pulled through the tracheal tube and removed by the traction member by folding the sheath over. <IMAGE>
