<p>The heat exchanger described here includes a head section and a heat-exchange section. The heat-exchange section consists of a bundle of inner conduits which are open at both ends and of a bundle of outer conduits which are open at only one end. The outer conduits enclose that part of the inner conduits which is inside the heat- exchange section, in such a manner that an annular space is defined between the conduits. During operation a fluid at a lower temperature is introduced into the head section, which functions generally at low temperature and high pressure. The cooler fluid flows through the inner conduits to the heat-exchange section and returns to the head section through the annular spaces between the inner conduits and outer conduits. The high-temperature fluid flows through the heat-exchange section in intimate contact with the conduits which contain the cooler fluid, in such a manner that the high-temperature fluid is cooled by the cooler fluid. The head section of the heat exchanger is protected against high temperatures which exist in the heat-exchange section by a temperature- adjustment zone which thermally separates the head section and heat-exchange section.</p> |
