The invention relates to a device for the reliable intermittent detection of occupied status of rail sections with automatic direction detection and follow-on locking. It is characterised by the following measures: - at least two probes are arranged serially at the limits of each rail section, - the probes at the limit of a rail section are connected to a circuit arrangement for occupied status detection and to a circuit arrangement for direction detection, - the occupied signal is fed to reliable AND elements (5n-1, 5n, 5n+1,...) which are assigned to adjacent rail sections, - the reliable AND elements (5n-1,...) are connected to the R-input of a reliable occupied status memory (6n-1,...) assigned to a rail section, - the S-input of a reliable occupied status memory (6n-1,...) is connected to the output of a reliable OR element (7n-1,...) which receives signals from other reliable AND elements (4n-1,...) which are assigned to adjacent rail sections, - the other reliable AND elements (4n-1,...) form signals from the backwards and all-clear signals or forwards and all-clear signals of the next but one rail sections. <IMAGE>
