The roof rack for vehicles, in particular for transporting a surfboard, contains at least two straps which extend transversely over the roof and can be fastened to the roof channel or to the roof struts. A support element is attached to each of the straps so as to be displaceable along the same, which elements are connected to one another by at least one transverse tube. The receiving sheath of the wheel suspension is located on the transverse tube. The wheel suspension is foldable and can be connected to the sliding element in a disconnectable fashion. In a preferred embodiment, the transport device extends laterally down from the vehicle when it is pushed towards the free end of the strap. Plug-in or screw connections secure the transport device on the strap which is constructed as a sliding rail.
