PURPOSE:To prevent deterioration in picture quality even when is used to a still camera, by constituting one unit of charge transfer of vertical charge element rows of a solid-state image pickup device with structure units of more than three which form deep potential in the transferring direction. CONSTITUTION:Signal charges of two pieces of photoelectric conversion element are sent to two structure units I and III of one constituting unit of charge transfer composed of three structure units I -III. By a clock pulse added to a transfer gate electrode and vertical charge transfer element row, a deep potential is formed below a transfer electrode 14 and a charge 20 in the structure unit I is shifted to the structure unit II. The charge 20 in the structure unit II is shifted to the structure unit III after the charge 21 in the structure unit III is shifted to next structure unit. Since charges of charge transfer elements are successively sent to a horizontal reading register and read out, a still camera, by which the picture quality does not deteriorate, can be obtained by effectively reading out signals of the photoelectric conversion elements at a fixed time. |
