A device for automatically controlling the engagement/release of a clutch has a control element for operating the clutch; the control element, which responds to a control signal, which is related to an engine speed signal, operates the clutch in that engagement of the clutch is performed at a speed of travel which is related to the engine speed. During engagement of the clutch the engine speed is monitored and the control element can be correspondingly actuated by the operating signal relating to the engine speed. Consequently the engagement of the clutch is brought about at a speed of travel which is precisely adjusted to the operation of the accelerator pedal. In particular a so-called half-engagement of the clutch can be performed smoothly and surely and the feel of the driver during the engagement process thereby greatly improved.
