An apparatus for controlling the movement of a vehicle tailgate comprising a support (18, 20, 22) secured to the vehicle body adjacent and below the tailgate, and a pivotable flap (30) which bears against the tailgate. A collapsible linkage (10) has arms (40, 42) which are pivotally interconnected at their one ends, the opposite ends of the arms being pivotally connected to the flap (30) and to the support (18, 20, 22) respectively. An actuating ram (12) is connected to the linkage (10) so as to be capable of swinging the flap (30) between first and second positions to open and close the tailgate, respectively. The arm (40) of the linkage is pivotally connected to the piston rod (26) of the ram at a location on the arm (40) spaced from the pivotal interconnection (48) of the arms. <IMAGE> |
