The table top type work surface (1) rests on at least two support arms (6) which can be regulated vertically and locked by pieces sliding in or along risers (3,4). Each riser is made of a profiled rail having an open longitudinal groove in which slides a bogey or guide (5) that rigidly carries the support arms (6). The bogey (5) has, vertically beneath the support arms (6), a projecting piece (20) which supports a braking arm (19) by connecting rods (21) mounted on a pivot. The braking arm engages in the riser groove to provide a firm lock or grip.
