The method is for distance determination using industrial robots, in movable parts of which are mounted television cameras. A primary video signal is received by the camera and transmitted, a first assessment value is determined from the signal contrasts, and the mobile part of the robot is moved so that a new video signal is received. - From this, a second assessment value from its contrasts is determined, and first and second values are compared. The mobile part of the robot is moved in the same direction as previously if the comparisons indicate that the second value exceeds the first, and in the opposite direction but with greater movement if the converse is the case. This is repeated until no increase in contrast is received, so that at this point the camera is focussed on an object whose distance in the axial direction of the camera is known.
