PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an encoding method using the code higher in encoding ratio as much as possible on the view point of the format efficiency when the code group is written into a storage device such as a magnetic disk. SOLUTION: This method is the constituting method for the MTR code of 19/20 encoding ratio. In this code, the number of continued '1' in the code group is restricted to four times or under. Where, as to '1' continuing four times, such a restriction is established that its existence is allowed only in the form of '10111101' at the almost all positions. The arrangement of '1' continuing four times keeping the state of no restriction before and after is made on only four position in one 20 bits coded word. Meanwhile, the conversion is carried out also on the connecting part between the coded word and coded word for satisfying the above regulation and also shortening the continuing length of '0'.
