An optical arrangement comprises a glass fibre (52) having a glass core and a glass casing of lower refractive index, the refractive index changing abruptly at the core-casing boundary and having a longitudinally-- extending side coupling zone in the form of an aperture (520) in the casing, and one or more photo-- detectors (54) arranged opposite to the apeture (520).
