On a bale opening machine, where a number of bales are opened at once, the highly compressed bales are treated from the top with a flocking device in the form of a roller having saw teeth or pins. The teeth penetrate between the bars of a grill resting directly over the bales. The bars of the grill may be moved horizontally, from side to side, or vertically, thus exposing different parts of the bale to the opening roller. The opener provides a high rate of prodn. and efficient opening without the need to displace either the bales or the opening roller.
