Tubular heat exchangers with leaking tubes can be repaired by plugging the ends of the defective tubes. The plug (10) consists of a cylindrical body (12) with a conical chamber (24) at one end which houses a conical piston (26). The rod (46) of the piston (26) extends into a smaller chamber filled with an explosive charge (50). The plug (10) is inserted into the tube (42) and the charge exploded by an electric device (48). The explosion drives the conical piston (26) further into the conical chamber (24) causing the external diameter (16) to expand and seal the tube (42).
