A cloth spreading machine (10) for accurately spreading layers of cloth (35) upon a cloth supporting surface (15) without a catcher mechanism, including a longitudinally reciprocably movable spreader frame (11) having a vertically movable spreader element (20), a motor (29) for elevating the spreader element and a sensor (41) adapted to detect an increase in the height of the cloth layers (35) and coupled to the elevator motor (29) for continually maintaining a substantially uniform height between the spreader element (20) and the top layer of cloth (34) within close tolerances. The spreading machine including a cutting mechanism for severing the cloth; a pinch roller device (105) for maintaining uniform tension in the cloth (18) fed to the spreader element (20); and an expansible flexible wind curtain (123) is mounted behind the substantially vertical path of the cloth web (18) on the spreader frame (11) and connected to the vertically movable spreader element (20) to prevent the wind produced by the movement of the spreader frame (11) from creating slack in the vertically depending portion of the cloth web (18) on the spreader frame (11). |
