A water-cooled and moderated nuclear reactor has a barrel(22) around the core for confining incoming coolant around the barrel exterior until it reaches the core lower end, and a shroud within the barrel directing the coolant flow upward through the core fuel assemblies. The shroud includes cylindrical bands (30) longitudinally spaced inside the barrel and surrounding a coolant boundary spaced around the assemblies. Struts extend between boundary and bands to transfer loads and strut thickness in the circumferential direction is less than the distance between adjacent struts so that uninterrupted longitudinal flow can be maintained.
