Suppressed balloon spinning spindle - having increased wraps around spindle

The spindle carries a hollow bobbin onto which yarn in wound by a traveller to form a package. Yarn fed to the spindle is engaged by a thistle crown on the upper end of an upper extension of the spindle and in passing from the thistle crown to the traveller the yarn is intercepted pref. by projections on the upper extension to increase the number of times it wraps around the spindle and bobbin. This increases the capstan affect and reduces the transmission of winding tension to the yarn passing to the spindle so that breakages are reduced. Pref. the projections are conical and are formed as studs which can be screwed into the spindle. The upper extension of the spindle may connect with the lower part of a frustoconical shoulder on which the projections may be provided.
