Composite materials are produced by applying continuously a molen strip of a thermoplastic resin (I) on a continuous polyethylene foam (II) and bonding (I) and (II) by applying pressure. Layer (I) is 20 mu to 5 mm thick, layer (II) is 1-120 mm thick and (II) has a density of 10-200g/l. (I) and (II) may be bonded with an adhesive which is extruded with (I). Alternatively, bonding is achieved by calendering at a pressure of 0.01-2N/min2. Pref. the surface of the roller in contact with (I) is embossed. A smooth and glossy surface is imparted to the polyethylene foam. The process obviates the need to use a preformed resin sheet, the resin being applied directly as a melt. The prod. may be used for packaging, in the automobile industry e.g. as windscreen, roof and door lining, for sports ground, for lining swimming pools, etc.
|
