Plant for the colling and/or drying of moulding sand and castings, using a driven drum rotating on a horizontal axis. The moulds contg. the castings are fed into the inlet end of the drum, and the sand leaves the outlet end of the drum at a lower level than a conveyor employed to remove the castings; and a hoist (a) is used to lift the castings so they are above their outlet conveyor. Hoist (a) may consist of baffle plates distributed round the outlet end of the drum; or electromagnets which lift the castings and are then switches off so the castings drop onto their outlet conveyor. The outlet end of the drum may possess a rim. Simple mechanical sepn. of the sand from the castings, where the latter can be carried by a short endless belt conveyor into a shot blasting cabinet or other appts. is provided.
