Chemical and clinical analysis by detecting enthalpy change - on reaction between e.g. antigens and antibodies

Process for chemical or clinical analysis comprises contacting the substance (I) to be tested with a specific reagent (II) so as to cause a change in enthalpy. This enthalpy change is determined and its value converted into an output signal. An appts. for this process consits of a thermostated reaction chamber fitted with a very sensitive thermoelectric probe incorporated into an electrical circuit. The probe is attached to a device for converting, and opt. amplifying the signal. Specified applications are (a) where (I) is an antigen or enzyme and (II) correspondingly an antibody or substrate; (b) determn. of blood groups, Rhesus factors or subsidiary blood types; (c) determn. and characterisation of human and animal plasma proteins; (d) in diagnosis of rheumatism and determining the C-reaction proteins of the rheumatoid factor, of antistaphylolysin and antistreptolysin contents.
