Permanently embossed, highly porous wallpapers are produced by preparing a sheet from a mixture of up to 90% by weight of cellulose fibers and at least 10% by weight of fibrils of at least one thermoplastic polymer, and subjecting the sheet, in any order, to the following operations: (a) embossing at a temperature lower than the softening temperature of the thermoplastic fiber; and (b) heating at a temperature equal to or higher than the softening temperature of the thermoplastic polymer. The term "fibrils" refers to elongated structures in the form of films or fibers of varying length comprised between about 1.0 mm and about 50 mm and the minor diameter or dimension of which is comprised between about 1.0 and 400 micron. |
