The water separator has a steam chamber at the top, a water chamber at the bottom and a separation zone in between. To conduct away water spreading in a film-like manner over the wall, which encloses the steam chamber, of the separator vessel (1), the water separator is provided with a suction channel (20). The inlet (21) of this suction channel (20) is situated between the inlet (11) for the steam/water mixture and the steam outlet (4) of the separator. The outlet (22) of the suction channel (20) is between the mixture inlet (11) and the outlet (13) for the water in an area of relatively low pressure resulting from the circular flow in the separator. By conducting away the water film via the suction channel (20), the degree of separation of the separator improves. <IMAGE>
