The drive to a spool for coiling steel strip is transmitted through the gear wheel (4) to the shaft (3) which rotates in roller bearings (2) mounted in the housing (1). A mandrel (12) formed from segments (11) is attached by the flange (13) to the shaft (3). The segments (11) of the mandrel (12) are expanded to grip the bore of the spool by the axial motion of the inner shaft (8) which is provided with splines (9) to fit the gear (4). The shaft (8) is actuated by hydraulic or pneumatic pressure on the piston. The splines (9) transmit the required operating torque directly to the inner shaft (8) and mandrel (12).
