A belt 3 is of a material megnetically attracted to permanent magnets 4 mounted on a slipper bar 5 along which the lower flight of the belt 1 slides. Two pole pieces 6 are common to the magnets. In use, the upper run of the belt 3 is attracted towards and taken along by, the adjacent run of the belt 1, any material between the belts being positively conveyed thereby. In a modification, Fig. 3, energization of electromagnets 7 by polyphase A.C. causes the belt 3 to be both attracted upwardly and driven. Further attraction is provided by permanent or electromagnets 8. In a further modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), split phase coils 9, which may liquid cooled, are arranged for connection to a single phase supply. Resistance-inductance components may be used to produce the moving field but may be switched out after starting. The magnetizable belt may be a flexible band of paramagnetic material in strip or gauze form; or one or two strips of paramagnetic material may be embodied in non- magnetic material. The belt may be of textile material having strands of paramagnetic material woven into it. As a further alternative, rigid paramagnetic material plates may be attached to the belt. Both the belts may be driven by external means and the adjacent belt flights may be other than horizontal. |
