1471378 Selective printing MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 1 May 1974 [2 May 1973] 19187/74 Heading B6F An electromagnetic printer includes a drive 54, 56, 58 for advancing a recoding web 52 past a group 14 of electromagnetic styli. Adjacent styli in the group 14 are able to produce adjacent dots on a line perpendicular to feed direction of the web 52. The spacing of adjacent styli is greater than that of the dots they produce. As shown in Fig. 1 each stylus 24-36 of the group 14 is cylindrical, of high permeability, high magnetic moment and low magnetic remanence, and has a pole face adjacent the web 52 which passes through recess 18. The pole face field intensity approaches the saturation magnetization of the pole face spacers 40, 42 and base member 38 provide a portion of the flux return path to the support member 16. As shown spacer 42 may be an electromagnetic coil providing a magnetic bias. Spacer 40 may also be a coil. A second group of styli 12 may be provided to produce coded marks 68, 70, 72 corresponding to the alphamenco 84, 86, 88. Fig. 3 shows how the keyboard output is handled for feeding to the styli. The motor 58 may operate stepwise in increments identical to the staggering of the styli 14.
