Heading C2C. 2,6-Dialkylphenol is prepared by reacting cyclohexanone with formaldehyde or acetaldehyde in the vapour phase at a temperature in the range from 150‹ to 850‹ C. in the presence of at least one compound of the metals of Group IA of the Periodic Table of elements as a catalyst. The preferred catalysts are carbonates, bicarbonates, nitrates and oxides of lithium, sodium, potassium. rubidium and cesium; lithium methoxide, sodium methoxide, lithium phenoxide, sodium phenoxide, potassium phenoxide, sodium formate, lithium acetate, potassium acetate, sodium acetyl acetonate and sodium salts of ethylacetoacetic acid. Compounds of metals of Groups IVB and VB of the Periodic Table act as catalyst promoters. Preferably, the catalyst is used on a support.
