Alkylbenzenes are condensed with dibasic acid anhydrides by heating under raised press. The reaction is carried out under the action of ionising radiation and optionally, peroxides. Preferably the alkyl benzene is toluene, ethyl benzene or m-xylene, the acid anhydride is maleic anhydride. Preferably, the molar ratio of alkylbenzene: anhydride is 5:1 to 45:1, gamma-radiation is used at a dose of 0.5x106-13x106 rad. The reaction uses no catalysts which require separation and regeneration, yields are high, the reaction may be continuous. |
