The invention relates to a motor vehicle cockpit, comprising a pre-fabricated built-in unit containing a cross-member (3), a visible shell (S), a heating or air-conditioning system and operational elements. An impact protection element is formed by a box-section (2) of the motor vehicle body which extends under the front edge of the windscreen, and the cross-member. This impact protection element is completed by a flat shaped piece (41) which is arranged between the box-section and the cross-member. Said flat shaped piece (41) serves as a mounting plate for functional and operational elements and in the event of a frontal impact, also couples the box-section and the cross-member and absorbs part of the energy of the impact. The box-section and the cross-member are preferably coupled by a linear introduction of force.
