A system for the controlled delivery of stents and grafts is provided to deliver a self-expansive stent, stent graft, or graft to a desired target site percutaneously within the vascular system of a patient. A stent and graft delivery system(10) comprises: an outer tubular catheter(20) having a proximal end; an inner tubular pusher catheter(14) having a proximal end and an outer diameter sized to slidingly fit within the lumen of the outer tubular catheter; and an elongate, flexible wire or cable(26) coaxially inserted through the lumen of the inner pusher catheter and having a first bead affixed to its distal end where the bead has a size to at least partially fit within the lumen of the inner pusher catheter at the distal end of the pusher catheter when a proximally directed tension is applied to the proximal end of the elongated flexible wire or cable with respect to the inner pusher catheter.
