A machine tool guide rail (5) supports a sliding carriage. The rail has a groove (4) which holds support fixtures. The rail (5) also has an upward-directed longitudinal groove (2) which is closed by a cover strip (7) the bottom part of which is slightly wider (9) than the groove. The cover strip (7) incorporates a side groove (8) and is made of a flexible material.
